The Intention behind the documentary "Journey to the Spotlight" was to capture the process that both the staff and performers at a youth theatre club create in order to form their well established public performance in March of each year. As the sole creative on this project filmed over 6 months, I was able to have the freedom to adapt the filming process to the individual performers based on their confidence in front of camera whilst also building the story as the time progressed. The end product was a feature length cinematic documentary.
When I first met Lottie I simply saw a typical 11 year old who loves to dance and perform. as time went on, her confidence and quick wit became a prominent character trait. It actually wasn't until it was highlighted to me that I saw her birth mark for the first time. 11 can be a challenging age for self confidence and having a visual difference can make you stand out from the crowd, but Lottie is a consistent positive influence on everyone she meets and so this portrait simply highlights who she is and inspiring others.
As a crew we set out to capture the moments of young Grey Seals as they head out to sea for the first time with an emphasis on sound. Seal vocalisations are often missed in recordings due to the environmental challenges. This mini documentary captures the story from the point of view of myself and the crew.
